9 Days Lemosho Route
The Lemosho Route already ranks among Kilimanjaro's most scenic and successful paths to the summit, and this extended nine-day itinerary adds an experience only a handful of climbers attempt each year: a night camped inside Kilimanjaro's summit crater, a few hundred metres below Uhuru Peak. Starting from the quieter western side of the mountain, you'll cross rainforest, high moorland, and the wide Shira Plateau before joining the standard summit route above Barranco Camp.

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you'll be transferred to your accommodation, where your guide will conduct a full briefing and equipment check to prepare you for the adventure ahead.

Lemosho Gate (2,300m) โ Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,800m)
After breakfast, drive roughly three to four hours from Arusha to Lemosho Gate on Kilimanjaro's western side. Once registration is complete, follow the forest track east โ known locally as Chamber's Route โ through thick rainforest to Mti Mkubwa, or "Big Tree Camp," your first night on the mountain.
Mti Mkubwa Camp ยท Overnight Stay

Mti Mkubwa Camp (2,800m) โ Shira One Camp (3,500m)
The trail climbs steadily out of the rainforest and into giant heather and moorland. It's a full day with a significant gain in height, so pace yourselves and drink plenty of water. Break for lunch near the ridge below Shira Crater before continuing up onto the high-altitude Shira Plateau, where you'll get your first close views of Kibo, Kilimanjaro's central volcanic cone.
Shira One Camp ยท Overnight Stay

Shira One Camp (3,500m) โ Shira Two Camp (3,900m)
A gentler day crossing the wide Shira Plateau, passing close to the Shira Cathedral rock formation with sweeping views across the plateau, the mountain, and the plains far below. After lunch at camp, most groups take a short acclimatization walk of an hour or so, gaining a little extra height before returning to sleep at Shira Two.
Shira Two Camp ยท Overnight Stay

Shira Two Camp (3,900m) โ Lava Tower (4,640m) โ Barranco Camp (3,950m)
A tough but rewarding day. The trail climbs steadily to the dramatic volcanic plug of Lava Tower, where you'll stop for a hot lunch at over 4,600m โ excellent acclimatization for what's ahead. From there, the path descends into the lush Barranco Valley, with views of the Breach Wall and Kilimanjaro's southern ice fields along the way.
Barranco Camp ยท Overnight Stay

Barranco Camp (3,950m) โ Karanga Camp (4,050m)
The day starts with the Barranco Wall โ a 300m/984ft scramble that looks intimidating but is straightforward with your guide's help, and rewards you with the Heim Glacier coming into view on Kilimanjaro's south face. From the top, the trail continues east beneath the Decken and Rebmann Glaciers to Karanga Camp, perched above the Karanga Valley.
Karanga Camp ยท Overnight Stay

Karanga Camp (4,050m) โ Kosovo Camp (4,900m)
A deliberately short day, built in purely for acclimatization ahead of your summit attempt. Kosovo Camp sits noticeably higher than the standard Barafu Camp used on shorter itineraries, and the extra altitude here โ combined with an early night โ makes a real difference to how you'll feel on summit day.
Kosovo Camp ยท Overnight Stay

Kosovo Camp (4,900m) โ Stella Point (5,756m) โ Crater Camp (5,730m)
This is the heart of the trip. After an early breakfast, climb through heavy scree to Stella Point on the crater rim โ mentally and physically the toughest stretch of the whole route. From there, descend around 30 minutes into the crater itself, where camp is set up at 5,730m. With the afternoon free, most groups explore the ash pit and glacier ice on the crater floor before an unforgettable dinner watching the sun set from the roof of Africa.
Crater Camp (inside Kilimanjaro's summit crater) ยท Overnight Stay

Crater Camp (5,730m) โ Uhuru Peak (5,896m) โ Mweka Camp (3,100m)
Because you're already sleeping close to the summit, today's push to Uhuru Peak is short โ around ninety minutes โ and timed to arrive for sunrise over Africa. After celebrating at the highest point on the continent, the real work begins: a long descent back through Kosovo Camp and down to Mweka Camp, dropping nearly 2,800m over the course of the day.
Mweka Camp ยท Overnight Stay

Mweka Camp (3,100m) โ Mweka Gate (1,640m)
A final, easy walk down through rainforest to Mweka Gate, where your crew will gather for a farewell ceremony before you say your goodbyes and collect your summit certificate. From the gate, it's a short transfer back to your hotel in Arusha for a hot shower and a well-earned rest.
